A low occurrence rate of planets has been identified at around twice the size of Earth (2 × R ⊕), known as the exoplanet radius gap or radius valley. It is not intended to be a biographical sketch or a reflection on one’s decision to enter the field.Recent astronomical observations obtained with the Kepler and TESS missions and their related ground-based follow-ups revealed an abundance of exoplanets with a size intermediate between Earth and Neptune (1 R ⊕ ≤ R ≤ 4 R ⊕). The statement of purpose should convince the admissions committee that the applicant is able to communicate effectively and with a deep understanding of mathematics. A number of recent graduates have won prestigious fellowships including the Clay Fellowship, the Simons Fellowship, and NSF Graduate Research Fellowship.
Most graduates of the program have been very successful at securing postdoctoral fellowships in academia. Students will have access to a wide range of resources including the Center of Mathematical Sciences and Applications, which brings together researchers from an extensive variety of disciplines and institutions and hosts conferences, seminars, and workshops. Other universities in the area include Boston College, Boston University, Brandeis University, MIT, and Northeastern University.
Students will be located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, one of the most active centers of mathematics in the world. This program is designed for students looking to conduct original mathematical research with the aim of becoming a research mathematician.
